Welcome

Welcome to Graceway Baptist Church! Graceway is a young church in the inner west of Melbourne with a passion for God’s grace.

Graceway was born out of the truth that God offers a free gift of grace to all people: forgiveness to all who will trust in the Lord Jesus to save them from sin (Ephesians 2:8-9). Accepting God’s grace unlocks salvation free and secure in Christ and the potential to living an abundant, godly life of spiritual growth (1 Peter 3:18). Graceway is committed to helping people find God’s grace and live it out in their lives.

Our Pastor

Our Purpose and Mission

Know God Passionately

True purpose in life is only possible by encountering God through Jesus. The chief purpose of life is knowing God. This means our relationship with God should be our first passion.

At GBC, our purpose is to develop a loving, enjoyable relationship with God. One way to develop our relationship with God is by regularly attending worship services to enjoy worshipping God through singing His praises and studying His Word, the Bible, and fellowshipping with other Christians.

Our glory does not come from human wisdom, strength, or riches but from knowing our loving and righteous God (Jeremiah 9:23-24).
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to God except through Jesus (John 14:6).
Eternal life is a personal relationship with God through Jesus (John 17:3).

Grow Together Biblically

The Christian life is the opportunity to engage with God, His plan, and His people! We engage through encouragement and equipping.

At GBC, our purpose is to grow to be more like Jesus so that we can spread His love and truth around the world. Some ways we equip ourselves is through discipleship, gifting evaluation, and training.

God has given believers gifts to use in service to others (1 Peter 4:10, Ephesians 4:11-16).
God has given those who know Him what they need to live a godly life and calls them to live with virtue, growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus. (2 Peter 1:3-8, 3:18).

Show Jesus Brightly

The purpose of engaging with God and fellow believers is to enhance the world. As we learn more about Jesus, love Him more, and lean on Him for direction and strength, He will help us to make a positive difference in the world.

At GBC, our purpose is ultimately to share the gospel of Jesus with others. There is no other greater act of love than sharing Jesus with someone else.

Those who know God should let His light shine through them in good deeds to glorify God (Matthew 5:16).
Jesus’ followers should teach others the gospel and how to follow Jesus and experience abundant life in Him (Matthew 28:18-20).

Our Vision and Core Values

God, God's Word, Gospel, Grace, and Godliness.

We centre all we do on Jesus. In all things, we seek to give Christ the preeminence (Colossians 1:18, Revelation 4:11, 1 Corinthians 10:31).

We study and submit to the Bible. We want to please God and stay true to His Word. The truths of God’s Word apply equally to all people for all time. We would rather be biblical than be popular. (2 Timothy 3:14-17, Acts 5:29).

We engage with the gospel. Sharing the life-changing truth of the gospel is the most compassionate and important endeavour in which we can be involved. (Matthew 28:18-20, 1 Timothy 2:3-6).

We value God's grace. God's grace provides salvation free and secure in Christ. God’s grace enables us to live beyond our capacity, serve with excellence, and to love with abundance. We will give of ourselves to God sacrificially, believing God will replenish us. (2 Corinthians 12:9, Ecclesiastes 9:10, Philippians 3:13-14, Daniel 6:3).

We love God and what He loves. We enjoy church life and serving together. We love our community and want to bless our neighbours. (John 15:9-17, Psalm 100:2, Nehemiah 8:10).

What We Believe

There is one God eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, and co-equal in power and glory, yet with distinct roles and functions. There is one holy, loving, eternal God that exists in three co-equal and co-eternal yet distinct person and function. God is without sin, personal, spirit, infinite, all-knowing, sovereign, perfect, immutable, holy, loving, wise, and powerful. (Matthew 28:19; John 1:1-3; John 14:7-16; John 17:5; 1 John 5:7; Colossians 2:9; Genesis 1:1; John 4:24; 2 Chronicles 6:18; Psalm 139:2-4; Psalm 115:3; Matthew 5:48; Malachi 3:6; Isaiah 6:3; 1 John 4:8; Romans 11:33-36; Genesis 17:1)

God created the heaven and earth and everything in them in six literal, twenty-four-hour days. Everything God made was very good, and there was no sin and death in the original creation. The theory of evolution and billions of years is unbiblical and not proved by science. (Genesis 1; Exodus 20:11; Genesis 1:31, Romans 5:12)

God lovingly created humans on the sixth day of creation in His likeness unlike any other creature on earth. All people are God’s special creation with a priceless soul (person) that will live forever and deserve dignity, respect, and Christian love. (Genesis 1:26-31, Revelation 4:11, Genesis 2:7, Psalm 8:3-6, John 3:16, 1 Corinthians 13:1-13)

As the Creator and giver of life, God has the authority to decide when life beings and should end. God says life begins at conception. He disproves of abortion, suicide and euthanasia. (Psalm 139:14-16; Jeremiah 1:5, 20:1-5; Genesis 9:6; Psalm 71:9)

All human beings are sinners and have chosen to sin against God. Sin is breaking God’s standards of right and wrong. Sin against God and others causes pain and problems in the world. The penalty of sin is death both physically and spiritually, i.e. separation from God. Those who die in their sin will be separated from God forever and face God’s just judgment for their sin and unbelief. People cannot save themselves from the consequence of sin but can only be saved through Jesus. (Romans 3:23, 5:12, 6:23; Psalm 5:4; Revelation 21:27; Galatians 2:16; Acts 4:12)

Jesus is eternally one with God but was born of a virgin by the Holy Spirit to accomplish God’s plan of salvation. He is fully God and fully man, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, willingly shed His blood to pay for the penalty of the sins of all humanity, was bodily raised from the dead and ascended into heaven where He now prays on behalf of believers, and is coming again to gather His people and rule on earth as King. (Matthew 1:18-21; John 1:1-3, 14; John 20:30; 1 Peter 2:21-22; Romans 3:25, 5:8, 11; 1 John 2:2; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; Hebrews 7:25; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 1 Timothy 6:14-15)

Human beings can be saved from sin—its penalty and power over the person—but must personally decide to believe and trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection as the only acceptable sacrifice that is sufficient to secure their salvation. Jesus completed the work of salvation by taking the sins of humankind on Himself, dying on the cross, and paying for sin.  His payment is not forced upon a person but must be accepted as truth by the individual. Human beings cannot save themselves by human effort or good deeds but must trust personally in Jesus alone for salvation. (Romans 3:20-22, 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 1 John 2:2; Hebrews 10:10; Romans 3:28; Ephesians 2:9)

He makes people aware of their need for Jesus, and He makes believers spiritually alive when they trust in Jesus, baptises every believer into the body of Christ, indwells them, secures their salvation, and assists them in knowing truth and living a godly, Christian life and equips them to serve others. The modern tongues and charismatic movements are not biblically based. (John 16:7-12; John 3:3-6; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:13; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 14:21-22; Mark 16:17-20; 1 Corinthians 13:8-13; Hebrews 2:3-4, 2 Timothy 4:20)

Baptism, which follows salvation, is a public declaration of a personal decision to trust in Jesus. It does not merit salvation but rather pictures dying to sin with Jesus in His death and rising with Him to live in righteousness. (Acts 2:41; Romans 6:3-4)

Having trusted in Jesus, believers are members of the body of Christ—the Church. God works through the local church which is composed of members who have been saved and baptised and have voluntarily united together for worship, fellowship, growth, and service. The primary work of the church is to help people know and follow Jesus. Each member should use their gifts to advance God’s work in the world through the local church. The Church is called to preserve God’s truth, and each local church is individually responsible to uphold the truths of Scripture (Acts 2:41-47, 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 12:3-8, 1 Timothy 3:15)

Jesus calls the Church to be united in Himself and the truth. (John 17; Titus 1:9, 2:1; Jude 3)

Baptism, which follows salvation, is a public declaration of a personal decision to trust in Jesus. It does not merit salvation but rather pictures dying to sin with Jesus in His death and rising with Him to live a new life in righteousness. (Acts 2:41; Romans 6:3-4).

The Lord’s Supper is a memorial of Jesus’ death and sacrifice for sin. The bread and the cup represent Jesus’ sinless body and blood which were broken and shed. This memorial is a reflective time for believers to reflect on their spiritual lives and remember what Jesus has done for them. (1 Corinthians 11:23-32)

Believers have received God’s grace for salvation, and God’s grace enables believers to live pure, godly lives. Believers should avoid sin and grow in righteousness and service. Consecration to God involves growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. It is God’s will for every believer to evidence sanctification. (1 Peter 2:21; 2 Peter 3:18; Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 5:18, 1 Thessalonians 4:3)

God created humans as male and female. He instituted the family with the first marriage between Adam and Eve. This marriage between a genetic male and a genetic female with a lifelong commitment is the model that God intends for human beings to follow. Sexual activity is to be exclusively reserved for this type of God-ordained marriage relationship. (Genesis 2:18-25, 19:5, 13; Romans 1:26-32; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Hebrews 13:4)

Satan rebelled against God and was cast out of heaven. He tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden and contributed to the fall of humankind into sin. He continues to tempt human beings, accuse God’s people before God, and seek their destruction. (Luke 18:10; Genesis 3:1-6, Job 1:6-12, 1 Peter 5:8)

In the future, Jesus will gather His Church to Himself and then return after seven years of tribulation to judge the nations of the earth and establish a righteous kingdom for 1,000 years. After this kingdom, there will be a final Great White Throne judgment, and then there will be a new heaven and a new earth where all things are made new. (1 Corinthians 15:51-58; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-9; Daniel 9:27; Revelation 19-22)

In the future, there will be two resurrections. The resurrection to life is for those who are saved to eternal life with God in His heavenly kingdom, and the resurrection of the dead is for those who are lost to eternal death (and the Lake of Fire). God is not willing that any should perish in the second death. (John 5:28-29, 1 Corinthians 15:12-20, 35-58; Revelation 20:1-5, 11-15, 2 Peter 3:9-11).
